cuncolim: Going by the Zilla Panchayat results it appears that entry of Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar and Cuncolim MLA Clafasio Dias into the BJP has strengthened the saffron party’s base in South Goa especially in Quepem and Cuncolim Assembly constituencies.
This was evident by the fact that the candidates backed by Kavlekar and Dias emerged victorious in South Goa.
The victorious candidates include Shanu Velip (Khola), Sidharth Gauns Dessai (Xeldem), Sanjana Velip (Guirdolim), Khushali Velip (Barcem) and Kepekar (Rivona).
The ZP results have proved the detractors wrong as they expected that the voters would teach a lesson to the rebel Congress MLAs who defected to the BJP.
It may be recalled that Kavlekar had expressed confidence that the BJP would win all five seats.
Addressing media persons, Kavlekar had said the voters would not fall prey to the Opposition’s false propaganda as they (voters) were with the government and the BJP.
Former Cuncolim MLA Joaquim Alemao and his son Yuri Alemao were supporting Sonia Fernandes in Guirdolim.
Addressing media persons, Clafasio said, “Despite several false allegations and the money power used by the Opposition, my voters have stood with me and my party. The Opposition tried to create unwanted issues, false propaganda and money power, which were rejected by voters. These results are the acceptance of good work done by our government.”
