Turtle carcass washed ashore at Talpona

CANACONA: A highly decomposed carcass of Olive Ridley was washed ashore on the northern side of Talpona beach on Friday. 
Officials of forest department were notified by the locals of the presence of the carcass of an adult Olive Ridley on the northern side of Talpona beach on Friday morning. 
As the carcass was highly decomposed the veterinary doctors were unable to perform post mortem analysis to ascertain the possible cause of death, officials said. 
With the start of the nesting season of Olive Ridleys, dead bodies of these marine creatures washing ashore is not a new phenomenon. However, common causes being over exertion while travelling thousands of killometres to mate and lay eggs at the place of their birth.
Other reasons attributed to their deaths is due to old age, sea pollution, drowning after getting entangled in fishing nets or after getting hit by propellers of mechanical fishing vessels.
Every time a dead Olive Ridley washes ashore in Canacona, the wildlife enthusiasts raise concerns over their untimely death.
But after the sad news of the dead Ridley, the turtle lovers were overjoyed when they came to know that a mother Ridley arrived at Agonda beach early Friday morning and laid 147 eggs. This is the second nesting at Agonda beach, sources said.
