VASCO: The Verna Police on Thursday arrested two directors of an automobile firm from Verna on the charge of evading GST to the tune of Rs 20.96 crore and VAT of Rs 10 crore.
Following a complaint by the Commercial Tax Department, the police arrested Muktar Shaikh and his son Maheed Shaikh on allegedly non-payment of GST to the tune of Rs 20.96 crore and VAT of Rs 10 crore including tax, interest and penalty.
According to the police, the accused collected taxes but did not pay to the government and wrongly availed input tax credit.
Both the accused were later released on conditional bail by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Margao. The accused are learnt to be one of the leading automobile dealers.
A case has been registered against both the accused under Section 132 (1) (C) and 132 (1) (D) of the Goa Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act, 2017.
