PANJIM: Porvorim police on Wednesday booked two brothers for allegedly raping their niece for nearly a decade. The FIR under Sections 376 (rape) and 354 (outraging modesty) of IPC and Section 8(2) of Goa Children’s Act was registered after NGO Hope Foundation pursued the matter with the police.
“The victim (complainant) claimed that her uncles had been raping her since she was 13 years of age. Since the girl was a minor at the time of the crime, we have invoked the Goa Children’s Act to the FIR. She claimed the sexual abuse continued till recently after which she decided to lodge a police complaint against them,” a police officer attached with the Porvorim police station said.
The NGO alleged that the police delayed registering the FIR. “Why did the police keep the case pending for four days? This is a serious issue and we decided to confront the police after the victim approached us for justice,” NGO Director Inacio Pereira told reporters.
