Local blamed land mafia for the fire. The bungalows behind want to have a view of the sea, locals alleged. They demanded a fire station at Mandrem. They also demanded that the beach area be demarcated for fishermen at the earliest. This is the third time canoes are being burnt, the owners said.
Alex Fernandes told Herald TV, “I don’t know who lit the fire. I received a call. When I hurriedly reached here, the two canoes and huts were completely burnt. The nets too were completely destroyed. Locals helped in putting off the fire. The Fire Brigade too came to assist in putting off the fire. The police too came to the spot. There is nothing left. The canoes are finished.”
“There is no electricity here. The department is not giving us power. If there is no light we cannot put CCTV. This is the third time that fire has occurred. Government is not taking any action on this. The properties which are behind this, they want a view. That’s why they want to finish the fishermen. Our demand is that the property on the beach side of the road be given to fishermen.
