PANJIM: Against the backdrop of Goa Police officers being involved in a nexus with sex workers and pimps, two of their colleagues have been accused of sexually abusing and harassing a woman on the roadside.
Two police constables, attached with Old Goa Police Station PCR van, have allegedly sexually abused a lady at Kadamba Plateau who they had accosted, when she was seated in a car with a friend. The matter came to light when the constables started calling the woman on her cell phone demanding sexual favors.
Sources said that the PCR van intercepted a couple sitting in a car parked on Kadamba Plateau and asked the couple for their identity cards. The policemen then started demanding money from the couple and later abused the woman. They also got her telephone number and threatened to take her to the police station, though she had clearly not committed any crime.
Disgusted by this, the lady opened up on the incident to one of her friends, and the matter later reached the higher authorities of Goa Police. The complainant had sought the immediate transfer of the PCR staff and asked for strict action.
Superintendent of Police (PCR) Bosco George said both policemen were immediately transferred and further proceedings are on. “I don’t want to spare such activities. I have already asked the concerned inspector to register an offence and start proceedings,” George said.
However, Old Goa Police Inspector Krishna Sinari said an offence has been registered against unknown police officers based on the complaint. He said the complaint has neither mentioned the name of the victim nor the police officers. “We have registered an offence under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code for molestation and outraging the modesty of an unknown female,” Sinari said.
The victim is not ready to
complain, and the offence was registered based on the third party complaint, and an inquiry in the incident begun.
The incident that occurred a month ago has shocked the force as the PCR van staff demanded money and also sexual favors.
This is not the first time such an incident has blemished the Goa Police. In 2009 three policemen were suspended and an offence registered against them for abusing a sex worker in a PCR van which was filmed by one of the PCR van personnel.
