VASCO: Hundreds of people using ferry services on Marcaim-Cortalim route are left to face severe inconvenience since last two days after two of three operational ferries on this route broke down.
According to information, following demand from the Marcaim gram sabha, the River Navigation Department (RND) increased to three the number of ferries on the Marcaim-Cortalim route which is the longest water route in Goa operated by the RND.
However, out of the three ferries, one broke down due to engine failure on Monday afternoon, while the second broke down on Tuesday morning due to clutch plate issue, leaving the passengers from Marcaim and other neighbouring villages and importantly the office-goers working at Verna and Sancoale IDC to face severe hardships.
On Tuesday, since only one ferry was in operation on this important route, large number of people, especially from Marcaim village had to suffer as they had to wait for a long time for the board ferry to arrive.
Considering the importance of ferries in the route, the RND officials also immediately summoned its mechanical staff to rectify the problem. However, workers at the site were unable to answer as to how much time they would take to rectify the problems.
