Two GU professors in VC selection shortlist

PANJIM: Two senior professors from Goa University are amongst the 23 candidates on the shortlist for the post of new Vice Chancellor of the varsity.  
Marine Science Department Dean Harilal B Menon and senior professor from the Botany Department Bernard Rodrigues are among the candidates who will appear for a virtual the interview on Wednesday before the three-member selection committee appointed Goa Governor and Chancellor PS Sreedharan Pillai.
Prof Malapati K Janarthanam, of the Department of Botany, is currently officiating as Vice Chancellor, following the term of Varun Sahni ending on August 18.
The three-member committee includes CSIR director general Dr Shekhar Mande, former NCERT director Jagmohan Singh Rajput and DRDO’s Director Satish Reddy.
Sources said that applications for the post of VC were invited online by the Governor’s office in June and 260 candidates had shown interest. “Complete secrecy has been maintained over the names of applicants. The committee is expected to shortlist three or four names and recommend it to the Chancellor for selection,” sources said.
Sources said that if the Chancellor does not approve of any of the names recommended by the selection committee, he can call for fresh recommendation.
As per GU statutes, the vice-chancellor should be a distinguished academician, with a minimum of ten years of experience as professor in a University system or ten years of experience in an equivalent position in a reputed research or academic administrative organisation.
