Two inter-State chain snatchers, burglars arrested

PANJIM: Two inter-State chain snatchers and house burglars were arrested by Porvorim police in connection with chain snatching offence, on Friday.

The chain snatching incident happened on January 15. According to North Goa Superintendant of Police Nidhin Valsan, a complaint was lodged by a 60-year-old lady Suman Rao from Bambolim stating that two unknown persons riding on a motorcycle came close to her and snatched away her gold chain and mangalsutra. The incident had happened in front of Jeevottam Math, Porvorim.

Upon report of incident, Porvorim PI Anant Gaonkar along with his team consisting of Porvorim Police Staff started investigation and began CCTV footage analysis and technical surveillance. Further, based on investigation, two accused persons namely Raju Selvaraj Tangaraj, 37, who is a native of Hubli, Karnataka and Bhimgunda Maruti Patil, 30, from Gadhinglaj, were nabbed in a swift operation at Pilerne. 

Police have seized cash of Rs 1.93 lakh, gold ornaments, unregistered motorcycle with a fake number plate, fake Aadhaar Card, car and other incriminating material from the accused persons. The entire property seized is worth Rs 10 lakh. Another accused person involved in the crime is on the run and efforts are on to nab him.

Both the accused persons are habitual offenders and have been previously arrested in an Arms Act case in the year 2020 by Valpoi police. The accused persons are also supposed to be involved in chain snatching and house burglaries across Karnataka and Maharashtra. Other States’ police were also on a lookout for these accused persons.

PI Gaonkar informed that the stolen property is yet to be recovered.
