PANJIM: Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) on Saturday successfully conducted two cochlear implant surgeries on children suffering from hearing disabilities.
Two patients, one aged four years and the other 14 months, were operated by Mumbai-based doctor Deepak Dalmiya. He was assisted by GMC ENT HOD Dr Goel. The surgeries were conducted as per the MoU signed by GMC with the Central Government.
A cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that can help provide a sense of sound to a person who suffers from severe or profound deafness.
“We operated two children today successfully. We are very happy to announce this,” GMC medical superintendent Dr Shivanand Bandekar said.
Three children were supposed to be operated on Saturday, however, the third child developed a fever, forcing doctors to postpone the surgery. “The child will be operated once the infection goes,” Bandekar said.
The government has identified another ten hearing impaired children, who will be also operated in the following six months.
