Two months on, streetlights at Colva Beach yet to be replaced

The lampposts have been taken out and not yet replaced, while the electric poles in the GTDC area have been removed as well.

MARGAO:  Local residents of Colva have complained about the non-functioning streetlights at the Colva Beach front and alleged that this issue has not been attended to despite the assurances that were given by Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte during his inspection of the beach two months ago.

Due to this issue, the beachfront is in darkness at night even though hundreds of tourists visit this beach daily and over the past week, there have been Ganesh idol immersions taking place here too. Moreover, the lack of illumination on the two rickety footbridges over the Colva creek that one has to walk along, to reach Colva Beach, has raised safety concerns for the public.

It may be recalled that a lamp had fallen from the lamp post at the beach recently and missed injuring a tourist by a sliver, while another tourist from Jaipur had lost his life when he got electrocuted after making contact with an electric pole in the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) property.

These lampposts have been taken out and not yet replaced, while the electric poles in the GTDC area have been removed as well.

There have also been similar complaints of non-functioning streetlights in other parts of the Benaulim constituency, like the Pedda-Benaulim road.
