Two siblings drown in pond at Verla-Canca

MAPUSA: In a tragic incident, two siblings aged 10 years and 5 years met a watery grave in a temple pond at Verla–Canca on Wednesday.

According to Mapusa Police, the incident came to light in the evening after the locals found slippers and a school bag on the edge of the pond. The two victims have been identified as Chandni Rajavat (10) and Piyush Rajavat (5).

According to sources, parents of the children are from Madhya Pradesh and have been residing in Goa for the past four years. 

Police informed that both siblings had left the house at around 2.30 pm for tuitions. However, instead of going for tuitions they visited the Pond which had lotus in full bloom. Police suspect that the children visited the pond to pluck lotus and in the process may have fallen into the pond and died in an attempt to save each other.

Police informed that when both the children failed to return by 5.30 pm, their mother visited the tuition teacher to inquire and learnt that they had not attended tuitions.

 Later, the parents went searching for their children and some kids playing near the pond informed the people that they had seen slippers and a school bag near the pond.

Mapusa fire station was informed about the incident. A team of Mapusa fire station headed by fire officer Vishnu Gawas rushed to the spot.

The fire fighters retrieved the bodies of both children, which were later handed over to the Mapusa Police. The police after conducting the panchanama shifted both the bodies to North Goa District Hospital.

Mapusa Police have registered a case of unnatural death.
