CANACONA: Due to rampant digging on the shoulders and improper compaction, two heavy vehicles got stuck in soil of the shoulders on NH66 in Canacona on Tuesday morning.
The drivers of heavy vehicles not knowing the mess the PWD and cable laying contractors have left behind, got their vehicles stuck in soil and were stranded till they were moved by using a crane later in the evening.
The roadside of the NH66 in South Goa was dug for laying fibre optic cable before monsoons. With no supervision from the authorities, the trenches were filled with soil and left to sink on its own.
Whenever unsuspecting drivers steer their vehicles on the edge of the road to give way for other vehicles, the tyres of their vehicles sink into the loose soil.
The complaints from locals regarding this has fallen on deaf years of the concerned authorities as the innocent heavy vehicles’ owners suffer losses for no fault of theirs.
Diogo Da’Silva, president of Canacona Business Community pointing out to the condition of this road said, “The contractor laying the cables has damaged the road, rendering it dangerous and unmotorable.”
“The concerned contractor after digging and laying cable has filled the trench with soil without following standard procedures,” lamented Da’ Silva.
“We will file a police complaint against the contractor and the authorities for damaging the public road and putting everyone’s life at risk,” said Da’Silva.
“Canacona has not even received a quarter of the rains and already the roadsides of the NH66 have sunk at many places due to digging, causing inconvenience to the motorists as well as the pedestrians,” said Manoj Prabhugaonkar, an activist from Canacona.
