CUNCOLIM: A two-year-old girl was found dead in a water tank at her ‘home’ in the Sao Jose de Areal industrial estate on Sunday.
Police stated that the incident occurred in the morning, when Ranjana Bhagat, a native of Orissa, was playing at her home while her mother was working. They stated that the girl may have climbed the concrete water tank, lost her balance and fallen inside. When a neighbour questioned where the girl was, the mother started searching and found her daughter inside the tank. The girl was rushed to Hospicio Hospital, Margao, were she was declared dead.
Meanwhile, Areal ST Association president Peter Viegas, in a statement issued after the incident, produced photographs of factory premises in which the child died. He stated, “This is a case of negligence and a wake up call for the authorities, such as IDC, Collectorate, and police. The industrial premises are used for residential purposes by 90 per cent of factory owners, which is against the rules.”
This was brought to the notice of the authorities, but no action was taken. We are enclosing photos of the tank and the illegal room where they resided.”
