UGDP too voices opposition

MARGAO, SEPT 28
The United Goans Democratic Party on Tuesday resolved to oppose tooth and nail Vishal Gomantak or Greater Goa and has demanded postponement of the ensuing Municipal polls till a census on the ST and OBC population is carried out by the government for reservation of wards.
At a meeting of the Party Presidium held this evening, the party has also resolved to hold organisational polls within the next two months and has decided to strengthen the party organisation.
The ensuing Municipal polls and the reservation of wards dominated the meeting with members coming down heavily on the government for not compiling any data before carrying out reservation of wards for the ST and OBC communities.
The meeting has decided to petition to the government to postpone the Municipal polls till data on the population of ST and OBC is compiled via a census.
Party secretary general Adv Anacleto Viegas said that the Presidium has asked senior party member Dr Jorson Fernandes to draft a petition to the government demanding a census on the ST and OBC population before holding the Municipal polls. He said the government is trying to reserve wards for the ST and OBC without any data and demanded a census to verify the population status of these communities.
He said the demand for Vishal Gomantak or Greater Goa was vehemently opposed at the meeting with the Presidium resolving to oppose the demand tooth and nail. “These people cannot now manage Goa”, he said and wondered how these people would take care of a Greater Goa.
On the organisational polls, Adv Viegas said that the party polls will be held within two months and added that the Presidium has resolved to strengthen the party to face the next polls.
He said the regional outfit will gear up to face the next Assembly polls by strengthening the organisation and taking the party to the nook and corners of the state.
