MARGAO: The United Goans Democratic Party has demanded nationalization of the mining industry and has called upon the government to terminate all leases and appoint local people as raising contractors.

“A few individuals are pocketing Rs 12,000 crore as profit annually from the mining industry. This revenue would have come to the state exchequer if the mines were nationalized. The beneficiaries of the mining industry are the big mining cos. The mining firms have contracted the mines to the sub-contractors, some of whom have become MLAs now,” he added.

Radharao said those agitating against closure of mines have the right to agitate, but they should be given the right to mine after the government identifies areas to be mined.
