Unauthorised child adoptions a ‘concerning trend’ in Goa

This trend especially is posing significant risks to the well-being of vulnerable children

PANJIM: A concerning trend within Goa where childless couples are involved in unauthorised adoption practices has been noticed lately. This trend especially in South Goa is posing significant risks to the well-being of vulnerable children.

Goa was woken up to the problem of unwanted and teen pregnancies after a 10-day-old baby was found dumped in garbage in Miramar.

Reports suggest that one minor girl is found to be pregnant every week while the organisations working in this field have said that the number is probably much larger than what meets the eye.

The Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (GSCPCR) was prompted to issue a public advisory on unlawful adoption practices within the state. GSCPCR said in a statement that it has identified a “concerning trend”, especially in South Goa, where childless couples are involved in unauthorised adoption practices, which, it said, poses a risk to the well-being of vulnerable children.

The Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has identified a concerning trend within Goa, especially in South Goa, where childless couples are involved in unauthorized adoption practices, posing significant risks to the well- being of vulnerable children.

Unlawful adoption practices present a substantial challenge, involving the bypassing of established legal procedures. This unethical trend, often driven by childless couples using unauthorised methods, undermines the legal safeguards meant to protect both children and adopting families.

While reacting to this, Esther Torres, Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee said, “There should be an awareness amongst people about the adoption agency that we have in both the districts. In some cases circumstances do not allow the parents to keep the child, but for such cases adoption agency is the only option.”
