CANACONA: Rising unemployment in Canacona is turning out to be a prime issue with around 5000 educated youth desperately hoping for jobs.
In order to tackle the problem, the government started an industrial estate way back in 1983 which drew companies such as Philips, Baba Tiles and Penguin Alcohol here and set up industrial units.
However, over the years 80 per cent of the companies downed their shutters slowly and vanished from the scene.
There is a vast area which can be a potential hub to set up many companies but both the government and subsequent MLAs have done precious little to lure companies here.
The Southernmost taluka in Goa lacks basic facilities such as regular water and electricity supply as well as proper internal roads also.
Residents say that the main reason for industrialists shying away from setting up shop in the taluka is frequent power outages.
The issue of water is no different either. Canacona harbours two dams namely Chapoli and Gavnem however, the Gavnem is yet to distribute water from its reservoirs.
