Unfenced stone quarries in Ponda, Dharbandora pose threat to residents

To date, no remedial measures have been taken and neither the mines and geological department, nor the panchayat keeps a watch here.

PONDA: Non-functioning stone quarries in Ponda and Dharbandora are filled with rain water and pose a danger to public safety as they do not have any fencing.

Locals say that in fact, one quarry which is just 150-200 meters away from the Government primary school poses a danger to students and the Dy Collector Nilesh Dhaigodkar had even ordered that a compound be built around it. To date, no remedial measures have been taken and neither the mines and geological department, nor the panchayat keeps a watch here.

It may be recalled that around 8 years ago, a JCB machine had fallen into the quarry near the primary school at Dhulle, claiming the lives of two labourers. A stone quarry at Tisk-Usgao is filled to the brim with rain water and poses danger to youth playing around.

Meanwhile, the waterfalls in Savoi-Verem, Borim, Adpai, and Priol are overcrowded by visitors who throw caution to the winds and take a plunge often in a drunken stupor and often ending in tragedies. Inebriated youth often create nuisance here and pick up fights with locals.
