MARGAO:  Drama unfolded at the Margao railway station today as members of the Animal Rescue squad demanded action as a consignment of beef arrived at the railway station in the wee hours of Thursday.
The beef weighing around 420 kilograms were later ordered to be destroyed by the veterinary doctor since it was not accompanied by a certificate. Dr Surendra Naik told the media on late Thursday evening that inspection of the beef consignment revealed that it was unfit for human consumption. “I have inspected the beef. There was no certificate accompanying the consignment. Since it was unfit for human consumption, I have ordered it to be destroyed”, he said.
Members of the Animal Rescue Squad had descended at the Margao railway station in the wee hours of Thursday following a tip off that beef consignment is coming to Goa by the Goa Express. When the train chugged at the railway station, the meat consignment could not be unloaded at Margao and it finally reached the Vasco railway station. The consignment was later transported to Margao railway station by the local Collem-Vasco train.
An Animal rescue squad member told Herald that the activists have assembled at the Margao railway station after they received specific information that unhygienic beef is loaded in the train for delivery in Goa.
