MARGAO: A large number of citizens gathered at Lohia Maidan, Margao, on Tuesday evening, to commemorate National Unity Day, where they took an oath to confront divisive elements seeking to create religious discord. The event, organised under the banner of ‘Goenkar-Ek Pavl Ekcharachem’ saw the participation of hundreds of citizens, including social activists and political leaders from across Goa.
The attendees urged the Goa government to foster an atmosphere of religious harmony among Goan youth by incorporating subjects and lessons that demonstrate the unity and solidarity of all Goemkars (Goans) throughout history. They vowed to uphold the values and principles of equality and justice espoused by historical figures like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, and Indira Gandhi.
The gathering appealed to religious leaders of all faiths to instil in their followers the values of religious understanding and harmony. They also unanimously resolved to oppose individuals and organisations that aim to divide Goans for their own vested interests.
Furthermore, they pledged to safeguard and pass on to the next generation a Goa that has always exemplified peace and harmony. The attendees emphasised that Goa is renowned for its scenic beauty and communal harmony, and they are committed to upholding this tradition.
Anant Agni, convenor of the civil society organisation, stated that divisive forces backed by vested interests have lately attempted to disrupt Goa’s strong social fabric by promoting hatred between religions. The participants came together as responsible members of Goan civil society to unanimously resolve to maintain and preserve the State’s rich tradition of secularism and communal harmony.
“We are committed to preserving the strong foundations of unity and harmony among all Goenkars,” said Agni. Speakers at the gathering emphasised that Goa and its people can thrive only when they remain united.
The group ‘Goemkar Ek Paavl Ekcharachem’ was created by like-minded citizens at Lohia Maidan on October 2, and had been organising public meetings across the State since then.
A clarion call was given to all activists who are protesting on various issues across the State, be it the anti-coal hub protests in Vasco, or anti-highway expansion protests in Khandepar, anti-marina protests in Nauxim, or other pan-Goa protests like the Tiger Reserve or Mhadei issue.
