Unity Mall opposed at Chimbel plateau

PANJIM: Residents of Chimbel voiced strong opposition to the proposed Unity Mall at the plateau, citing concerns about environmental degradation.

The villagers argued that the mall would lead to the destruction of biodiversity and vegetation, potentially causing landslides and water pollution.    Krishna Mulgaonkar, a resident said, ” In the proposed plan position of crematorium has been changed. Correct survey number is not being shown. Both affidavit and plans are false. The plan has been accepted by the Panchayat blindly.”

Govind Shirodkar, another resident, said,” Earlier the site was proposed to be developed as an IT park. Everybody supported it and wetland was developed. Part of it has been used while rest of the area is free. Trees have been cut without obtaining permissions from the forest department.”

Chimbel Sarpanch Sandesh Shirodkar said that there is a problem due to different survey numbers and added that the issue was discussed but a decision cannot be taken unless there is proper information on the issue.

He said the work was started without panchayat being taken into confidence.
