Unkempt shrubbery, dumping of garbage mars neglected park in heart of Margao

MARGAO: The neglected state of a park in Margao, located just opposite the lower court, has become a threat to the safety of local residents, particularly children. Over time, the park has devolved into a dumping ground for garbage and waste and is now characterised by dry tree trunks and unkempt bushes, more eyesore than the green lung it was meant to be.
Several concerned citizens have voiced their frustration at the lack of attention paid to the park by the Margao Municipal Council in recent years. Speaking to O Heraldo, these residents point out that the park’s dilapidated condition is evident from the tall dry grass that surrounds it, providing a safe haven for snakes and other potentially dangerous reptiles.
Moreover, the compound wall and benches within the park are now riddled with cracks and damage. Despite previous efforts to improve the park, including its beautification in October 2014 with MPLADS funds, during the tenure of former MP Narendra Sawaikar, the current state of the park is a testament to the lack of proper maintenance.
Local resident Rosario Fernandes accused the Margao Municipality of neglecting the once-beautiful park and failing to carry out proper maintenance, resulting in a denial of access to a decent park in the area. He stated that due to the park’s location in a busy area with several commercial establishments, hundreds of people are affected by its state.
When contacted, local councillor Vitorino Tavares said he has already initiated the process of beautifying the park with the Municipality, recognising the importance of maintaining such a prime location. The council has approved the plan and work is set to commence within the next couple of days. Tavares said he would ensure that waste dumping within the park is prohibited, and that the park is restored to its former glory.
