Unknown miscreants steal cellphones, Rs 40K cash from trucks parked at Usgao

PONDA: Six mobile phones and Rs 40,000 were stolen from the trucks parked in a pay parking area near the Sanjivani Sugar Factory, Dharbandora. The incident came to light on Monday morning and truck drivers suspect that a gang of robbers was behind this act.

Trucks from neighbouring states are parked near petrol pumps close to the factory and the area has been illuminated for the convenience of drivers at night.

“Pay parking in the premises of the sugar factory for the past few months has been a good relief for the truckers. However, the truck drivers are under stress due to such robberies. The government needs to build a truck terminal for the truckers so that all the operations will become much more organised and safety of drivers will also be taken care of,” said Nagraj Naidu, Ponda Goods Transports union.

When contacted, the sugar factory’s administrator Satej Kamat said that CCTV cameras will soon be installed in the area after Sunday’s incident and added that it was the responsibility of the drivers to take care of their belongings.
