Unplanned road-side digging at Karmalghat obstructing traffic

Uncleared dumps of soil on NH66 at Karmalghat by cable laying companies poses danger to the commuters.
Authorities have turned a blind eye to the rampant digging by the highway side and piling of the excavated earth on the NH66 road on Karmalghat, which has led to several accidents, some even fatal.
The contractors do not care about road safety or law and continue to dig the side of the road sides for laying optical fibre cables in the section between Balli to Canacona.
The continuous and haphazard dumping of soil has narrowed the highway rendering it dangerous for vehicles. It is common to see huge piles of mud dumped by the roadside, even on the highway itself at some places and even on blind curves in the forested portion of the NH66.
The upkeep and supervision of this stretch is the responsibility of PWD highways, with their office in Margao.
Every time any company approaches the PWD for road digging they give permissions with lot of restrictions and riders, but the restrictions are seldom followed.
A few weeks ago a reputed mobile service provider had started digging the road side from Balli till Canacona and similar sight was witnessed.
Enquiries with the NH66 office in Margao revealed that they have issued letters to the concerned company violating the prescribed procedures umpteen times but they are yet to mend their ways.
Sources revealed that they are now thinking of terminating the excavation work permissions.
