MARGAO: The unforeseen January rain across Salcete late Wednesday night surprised residents, causing disruptions in daily life and affecting private family functions like weddings and coastal establishments like shacks.
This unanticipated wet weather also triggered a major power-cut, with large parts of the South district plunged into darkness for more than an hour. In addition, the abrupt rainfall also raised worries among locals regarding potential damage to fruit-bearing trees.
In a respite from the unexpected surge in winter temperature, the capital city of Panjim experienced light drizzle of rain on Thursday evening. The rainfall is likely to bring the temperature down in the city. Recently, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Altinho had forecast light rain at isolated places, followed by expectations of light to moderate rain from Thursday to Saturday, due to a ‘circulation in the Arabian Sea’.
Meanwhile, as per the IMD Goa data, three areas of the State received rainfall during the last 24 hours ending 8 am on January 4.
As per the data, Ponda received 0.11 inches of rainfall, Canacona 0.12 inches, and 0.13 inches of rainfall in Sanguem during the last 24 hours ending 8 am on January 4. December 2023 witnessed mostly warm weather, fluctuating between 33 to 35 degrees Celsius.
