MARGAO: Vegetable price shot up in State’s market as neighbouring States– Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu—are are flooded by unseasonal rains. This has also hit the price rise of essential commodities too.
A bunch of Fenugreek (methi) which was Rs 7per bunch has now gone up to Rs 15/bunch while the rate of bunch of coriander are raised to double of its initial value. “Customers hesitate to buy a small bunch of coriander for Rs 30,” said Deelip a vegetable vendor from Ponda Market.
The rate of tomato has shot up to Rs 70per kg while onion per kg costs Rs 50. Potato is stabilised to Rs 35 per kg. Rate of some vegetables, especially tomato depends upon its quality. While the hybrid pieces costs Rs 70 per kg, the Jawahari tomato costs Rs 50 per kg. Carrot and ladyfingers are stabilised to Rs 80 per kg since last week.Capsicum now costs Rs 80 per kg, which was Rs 60 previously, said another vendor.
The current retail rate of Cluster Beans is Rs 60 while French Beans has hit the rate as high as Rs 120 per kg. The rate of French Beans has doubled since last two days. Rate of Cluster Beans, which used to fluctuate between Rs 40 and Rs 50 has now gone up to Rs 60 per kg.
Green Peas’s wholesale rate itself has reached
Rs 120 per kg. Cabbage is Rs 30 per kg which was Rs 20 previously. Cucumber is Rs. 40, bottleguard Rs.30 while bitter melon and Brinjal costs Rs. 60 per kg. “Almost all the vegetables are ordered from neighboring States, which includes Chikmangluru, Ghataprabha, Belgaum, Pandharpur and sometimes Ghatapur,” said Shankar a wholesale supplier from Ponda market who also owns a retail vegetable store in the neighboring village. “I had brought onion at Rs 44 from wholesale market. I sell it for
Rs 50,” Shankar added.
The rates in Goa Horticulture and Goa Bagayatdar though have remained more or less same as on Saturday. “These vendors are just fooling us,” criticised Santosh Naik, one of the customers.
