PANJIM: Various parts of Goa witnessed scattered rainfall on Tuesday, due to sudden change in the weather. The skies were cloudy and it rained in and around Panjim and other towns such as Ponda.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Goa, forecasting scattered light rainfall across the State on Wednesday and Thursday as well in North and South Goa. Shallow fog has been forecast at isolated places on 11 January 2024.
The unanticipated rainfall on Tuesday caught people unawares, especially those leaving for their homes after work. The light showers however brought a welcome drop in temperatures. However, ongoing weather patterns have shown a consistent uptick in rainfall since the beginning of the month, particularly affecting areas like Ponda, Salcete, Bardez, and Tiswadi.
Heavy rains lashed Ponda at around 5 pm, on Tuesday, for more than half hour and took the locals by surprise. The town also witnessed unexpected rains on two occasions since the past two week.
While the rain gave respite from rising temperature, as the rain came down there was a power cut for some time.
In both the northern and southern districts, the IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies, with anticipated maximum and minimum temperatures hovering around 33°C and 24°C, respectively. Projections from the IMD indicate that minimum temperatures are likely to remain above normal for the next three days, prolonging warmer conditions even during the winter season.
Squally weather with wind speed of 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is very likely to prevail over Gulf of Mannar, Comorin area, adjoining Maldives area and along. There is no weather warning for fishermen along the Goa coast.
