MARGAO: Seventeen trucks full of fish, which remained unsold on Thursday due to the raid by Food and Drugs Administration, was sold instantly on Friday morning. Another five trucks of fish which came from Kerala and Andhra Pradesh also got sold out on Friday morning.
The Wholesale Fish Traders Association President Moulana Ibrahim confirmed this news. It was being predicted that the action taken by FDA on Thursday will have adverse effects on the sale of the fish at the Wholesale fish market at Seraulim. However, there was a similar rush at the fish market on Friday morning.
Suraj Naik, a fish vendor, while speaking on the episode of Thursday, said, “Fish is the staple food in Goa and any news won’t stop customers from purchasing fish”.
“The sea is rough these days and there is a ban in place too. Hence excluding big fish like Pomfret, Kingfish, small fish like prawns, mussels, black pomfret, mackerels are available in the market,” he added.
Felix Dias from the retail fish market said, “Due to the action of FDA on Thursday the retailers had to face major losses and hence the prices have climbed today to some extent.”
Since the wholesale fish market was closed down on Thursday the markets of Sanguem, Quepem, and Curchorem also remained closed. However, the markets opened on Friday.
