CANACONA: Newly-elected Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Simon Rebello and CMC Chief Officer Sudin Natu were confronted by heaps of untreated garbage, when they inspected the Dumane garbage treatment plant.
Soon after taking over as head of CMC, Rebello had assured to make proper use of the garbage treatment plant at Dumane set up a year ago and to stop unscientific disposal of garbage.
Natu, who is also deputy collector of Canacona, agreed to the chairperson’s request to inspect the plant and visited the same, where treatment activities have been stalled since the past several months. Rebello decided to visit the site amid public complaints that civic officials have been working in tandem with some unscrupulous workmen to dispose of garbage by setting it on fire.
“It was a fake picture that workers were feeding the civic authorities, and Natu saw with his own eyes when we visited the plant,” Rebello told Herald.
“The fire was still burning the unsegregated heaps of garbage and when there is vast area inside the well-protected compound, garbage is clandestinely dumped outside the entrance and surroundings,” Rebello complained.
“The chief officer agreed to my observation that this massive garbage mess at the treatment plant needs to be sorted out and he decided to depute workers, who are engaged by the municipal council for odd jobs,” said Rebello.
Rebello said that he intends to clean the garbage mess by putting the Dumane plant to its proper use within the next few days.
Meanwhile, CMC sources have said the DMA has given its nod to engage 10 additional daily wage workers at the CMC, as against the
previous approval of 20 labourers.
