MARGAO: The Colva Civic and Consumer Forum (CCCF) has questioned how authorities are turning a blind eye to the blatant discharge of wastewater by certain establishments, onto Sernabatim Beach.
Judith Almeida of CCF also showed photographs where pipes from these establishments can be seen opening out directly onto the beach. CCF members have also raised complaints about garbage and waste including sewage water being dumped on the beaches in Salcete, which includes the touristy Colva Beach.
This comes against the backdrop of the recent Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by CCF against the State government for the delay in commissioning the Colva Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP).
The Bombay High Court at Goa had issued show-cause notices to the Director of Tourism Nikhil Dessai and Managing Director (MD) of Sewerage and Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa (SIDCGL), Amar Vazirani. In those show-cause notices, they were asked why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against them for failing to comply with the order to make the STP operational by the extended date of March 31, 2022.
It may be recalled that in March 2021, the HC had directed the State government to complete the setting up of the Colva STP and it had then given them a deadline of June 2021 to make the plant fully operational in order to put an end to the discharge of untreated sewage into Colva creek.
