PONDA: A water tank constructed by the public works department (PWD) several years ago at Mankatemal – Nirankal has been lying unused, despite the pressing water shortage in many parts of Ponda taluka. Believed to have been built approximately 30 years ago, the tank has the capacity to store and supply water to the surrounding areas, offering a possible solution to the ongoing crisis. Local residents are demanding that PWD engineers investigate the matter and make optimal use of the available resources.
Located in the hilly area of Mankatemal, the water tank has remained idle since its construction. Although pipelines were connected to the tank for water supply, they have been dry ever since. The areas of Mayne, Konshe, Gawalwada, and nearby villages could benefit from utilizing the tank. Given the water shortage faced by these regions, locals have been urging officials to commission the tank.
Hemant Samant, a local social worker, has raised the issue multiple times during gram sabhas, emphasizing the importance of utilizing the water tank for storage and supply. In April, PWD engineers were informed about the tank’s potential. Assistant Engineer Kashinath Saraf from Ponda inspected the unused tank, adding weight to the community’s plea.
