MARGAO: A fortnight after the KTC stopped the maintenance contract with the Cuncolim Municipal Council, waste disposal is staring at the half-a-decade-old Rs three-crore Cuncolim bus stand.
There’s neither an agency to oversee the upkeep and maintenance of the bus stand nor any personnel to look after the security requirements.
Days after the KTC communicated to the Cuncolim Municipal Council its decision to stop maintenance fees to the civic body from September 1, the latter has withdrawn the dustbins stationed at the bus stand premises for collection of waste. The result being that the collection bins have not only suddenly disappeared from the bus stand, but the stall owners are facing problems in the disposal of the waste. That’s not all. KTC officials admitted that there’s no one even to take care of bare minimum maintenance of the bus stand since a fortnight after contract with the CMC was terminated.
Stalls owners and commuters have also complained about the open sewage chamber, emitting foul odour at the bus stand. They have demanded to know why the KTC authorities cannot even maintain a chamber by closing the same with a lid.
When contacted, CMC Chairperson Devendra Desai said the civic body is no more looking after the upkeep and maintenance of the bus stand. “The civic body was entrusted the responsibility of looking after the bus stand since the last four years to tide over the state of affairs. Since September 1, the KTC have stopped the contract saying they will carry out the cleanliness and maintenance. We have no problem, but the civic body only requests the KTC to clear the dues pertaining to the last eight months, which works out to Rs two lakh.”
