MARGAO: Betalbatim gram sabha witnessed an uproar over a mega housing project, even as the sarpanch assured agitated gram sabha members to scrap the project and return back the file.
The meeting also discussed the burning garbage issue, with Saprnach Esperance Fernandes disclosing Panchayat’s plan to set up a waste treatment plant in the village.
The mega housing project took the centre stage with members demanding its scrapping. Gram sabha member Marcus D’Souza demanded a debate on the project, saying that the property was sold to a Delhi party which has now proposed construction of bungalows. He said that a number of housing projects that have come up in the village are beyond the reach of the local villagers and called for a total ban on mega housing projects.
Nuvem MLA and gram sabha member Mickky Pacheco assured the members that the file would be returned back, even as the sarpanch told the members that the Panchayat would scrap the project.
Pleas by Marcus for a thorough debate on the issue was turned down, with the Sarpanch asserting that the file will be returned back and the project scrapped.
On the garbage issues, the sarpanch later told newsmen that the site for the proposed plant would be shortlisted after inspection by the Water Resources department and the Goa State Pollution Control Board.
 “I have made it very clear to the members that there should be no objection to the site approved by the GSPCB and WRD. Otherwise, those objecting should make available the land”, she said.
The Sarpanch pointed out that she has been promised support and assistance to  build the waste treatment plant, adding that the proposal for the waste treatment plant would be placed before the gram sabha for final approval.
