MARGAO: Residents of urban areas are not forthcoming to take sewerage connection as compared to the residents of the panchayat areas, according to officials of the Sewerage & Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa Limited.
Since the commissioning of the 20 MLD sewerage treatment plant in June last year around 313 connections have been released in the Rumdamoll Davorlim panchayat area nearly covering the entire panchayat area.
“However as some of the buildings have around 100 flats and in one case there were 200 flats, the actual people benefitted with these connections will be around 6000 households,” said Assistant Engineer Ganesh Velip who is looking after the sewerage connections in Margao.
The panchayat members of Rumdamoll Davorlim took around 600 forms from the department and went to the households to get the people to register for the sewerage connection and that is the reason why there were so many applications from the village.
In Margao while there were not many applications coming earlier, they have started now since MMC officials cautioned people that if they do not take sewerage connection they ran the risk of getting their electricity and water supply disconnected.
Currently there are around 100 applications from Margao that need to be cleared and according to MMC Councillor Doris Teixeira all councilors will start visiting households once Ganesh celebrations are over.
Presently in Margao 855 flats, 175 houses, 210 shops, 3 hospitals and 5 hotels or restaurants are connected to the sewerage system.
The Sewerage Corporation has prepared around 800 cross connections and kept them ready so that whenever anybody’s sewerage connection is approved, it can be connected to the system without cutting the road and these connections will be given in the month of October.
