Usgao parents, students protest for more teachers

Parents threaten to withdraw children en masse from Davshirem school if govt fails to post more staff within 15 days

PONDA: The 93 students studying in Government Primary School, Davshirem, Usgao, and their parents protested in front of the school demanding immediate appointment of additional teachers, on Tuesday.
For the last several months, a single teacher has been managing the affairs of the school which has 93 students studying in first to fourth; and on Monday, one para teacher was appointed. However, the parents feel that this temporary measure is insufficient. They are worried that the education of their children would suffer due to insufficient number of teachers.
As per the student-teacher ratio guidelines, the Davshirem school should have at least four teachers. However, for the last several months the school had a single teacher for 93 students. Therefore, for the last three months, the parents have been demanding that more teachers be appointed in the school. They had also set a deadline for meeting their demand. But since the education department failed to appoint the mandatory number of teachers within the deadline, the parents staged the protest on Tuesday.
During the protest, the parents also threatened to withdraw their children from the school if the required number teachers are not appointed within fifteen days from then.
Speaking to the media persons, the Parents Teachers Association President Radhika Fatrekar said that two more permanent teachers are needed for the school. “If education director fails to meet our demand within fifteen days, we will en masse apply for leaving certificates of our children from the school,” she said.
She informed that the PTA members along with all parents would meet and present their grievances before the local MLA and Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on December 1.
