UTAA demands roll back

MARGAO: Asserting that the government Amendment to the Goa Agricultural Tenancy Act will do more injustice than justice to the farming community, particularly to the tribes in Goa,

the United Tribal Association Alliance (UTAA) on Saturday demanded that the government stop the transfer of tenancy cases from the Mamlatdar courts to the Civil court. UTAA has asserted that the amendment will defeat the very purpose of the 5th Amendment to the Tenancy Act, which has even been included in the IXth Schedule of the Constitution. UTAA President Prakash Velip contended that farmers and tenants will face financial hardships and settlement of cases will take even longer. Velip further contended that Mamlatdars are more conversant and are easily accessible to farmers and the tenants, adding that transfer of tenancy cases to civil courts will only add to the work load and worsen the functioning of these courts and also be a costly affair for the farmers.
UTAA also raised questions on the fate of the 18-C cases wherein tenants had paid the purchase price in 1993, but were awaiting sanad though judgement have been passed, but were not signed by the Mamlatdars concerned..
