QUEPEM: “Vachpa Ghor”, a novel initiative launched in Copelabhat Deao, Ambavali in Quepem, is aimed at inculcating the reading habit among the youth to get maximum exposure to educational content and benefit from it to build a bright future.
The locals had started the library before the pandemic however, for the past two years the same had to be shut due to the spurt in COVID cases. Now, with the situation slowing improving the library is kept open from 5 pm to 7 pm. Books, novels, magazines, newspapers, etc, are available at the library for the benefit of the village youth. Senior citizens too can make their leisure time count at the library.
Joao Fernandes, a resident, who took the initiative to start ‘Vachpa Ghor’ said, “The library was opened before the pandemic. However, we had to be shut it for the past two years due to COVID-19 situation. The library comprises newspapers, magazines, novels and educational books for the village youth.”
Joao said, “The purpose of running this library in the village is to encourage the youth to get maximum exposure to educational content and benefit from it to build a bright future.”
Fernandes said, “Before starting the library, we had convened a meeting of the villagers who accorded their approval. We also created awareness among the locals about the library with our door-to-door visits. The library got thumbs up from the locals.”
Franco Rebello, another local, who made the library a reality, said, “The premises earlier housed an anganwadi with a library which was run from the anganwadi funds. At that time it had only books and newspapers and now the anganwadi has been relocated.”
Lourdes Fernandes, another resident, said, “Vachpa Ghor is located in a religious place in the village called “manna” in Konkani. Some people regard it as a place where people gather for some religious activities or gatherings. Our villagers thought that this place will be used for a good cause. We are trying to bring people together at this place and are working unitedly towards a better future for our youth. And with this in mind, we launched ‘Vachpa Ghor’ especially for the youth.”
