Valpoi by-poll: SGF to take decision today
HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, SEPT 25
The Save Goa Front will decide on Sunday whether to contest the ensuing by-poll for the Valpoi Assembly seat.
Claiming that he continues to be the president of the SGF, former MLA Antonio D Gauncar said he has convened an urgent meeting of the party office bearers at Arlem-Raia on September 26 at 11 am, to discuss about the SGF’s participation for the Valpoi by-polls.
“Many have approached the party office and showed their willingness to contest on the SGF ticket. We will soon decide and announce on the candidates”, he said.
When questioned whether he has the power to preside over the party affairs when the Delhi High Court has stayed the Election Commission decision recognising him as the SGF president, Gauncar said that he has been receiving correspondence on election and other matters from the Election Commission.
“I don’t know the outcome of the proceedings in the High Court. But, the fact remains that I have been receiving communications from the Election Commission on all matters, including the correspondence on the Valpoi by-polls”, he claimed.
The High Court had last year stayed the EC ruling recognising Antonio Gauncar as the SGF president. Since then, the matter has been pending in the Delhi High Court, with even the office of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly awaiting the outcome to decide on the disqualification petitions pending against PWD Minister, Churchill Alemao and Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco.
