VALPOI: Workers of Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) went on a strike on Wednesday morning to demand a hike in their daily wages.
VMC Chairperson Ramdas Shirodkar and all other councillors were surprised to see all the workers gathered in front of VMC building protesting hike in daily wages. The garbage which was to be removed from the roads was left unattended to till afternoon. In all, 14 municipal workers and four drivers participated in the ‘dharna’.
Shirodkar and few councillors gave a patient hearing to the grievances of the workers, who called off their strike and joined the duty only after assurances from Chairperson Shirodkar that their daily wages would be hiked.
Later in the afternoon, the workers removed all the garbage from the road at Bazzar area.
The striking workers also refused to remove the garbage generated on bazzar day (Tuesday).
