PANJIM: In a major boost to the ongoing induction drive in the Goa Trinamool Congress, the entire Congress Valpoi Block and a prominent mahila Congress member joined the regional party on Tuesday.
The Congress’s entire block level leadership in Valpoi including eight office-bearers and 200 workers joined the TMC in the presence of former Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro and other party leaders.
Simultaneously at the party office in Panjim, former general secretary of Indian National Congress (Mahila wing) Priya Rathod too joined the TMC in the presence of TMC’s Parliamentary leader in the Rajya Sabha Derek O’ Brien and Goa TMC leaders Lavu Mamledar and Swati Kerkar.
“Hailing from Saligao, Rathod is one of the most formidable women leaders in Goa and is also the Mahila President of Banjara Samaj Goa, apart from being the founder of an NGO named ManDev Foundation. She has been a long-term advocate for equal rights for women in diverse fields such as Health and Education,” reads a statement issued by the TMC after the induction ceremony at Valpoi and Panjim.
Keeping the focus on women, Derek O’Brien challenged the BJP to bring in the Women’s Reservation Bill before the elections in Goa. He further demanded an amendment of the current 33 per cent reservation for women at the Panchayat level to be increased to 50 per cent.
“Goa Trinamool Congress is proud to induct dynamic grassroots leaders who will play a pivotal role in shaping the party and ushering in a new dawn in Goa,” he said.
