A police assistant sub-inspector was assaulted when he tried to clear a group of picnickers from the road near the Chorla waterfall on Sunday evening.
According to reports, Valpoi ASI Yeshwant Gawas and four police constables attached to Valpoi police were deployed to regulate traffic at Chorla Ghat due to traffic chaos, mostly on Sundays. Many tourists and locals have been visiting Chorla waterfall during the monsoon.
Police further informed that when ASI Gawas and police constables reached Chorla Ghat on Sunday afternoon, they noticed a heavy rush of tourists and locals near the waterfall. However, they managed to control the traffic till evening.
At about 5.30 pm, ASI Gawas noticed a traffic chaos, as a group of about 10-15 youth holding liquor glasses were seen dancing in the middle of the road.
When ASI Gawas requested the youth to clear the road, they allegedly assaulted him and other policemen rushed to his rescue. After noticing a group of policemen, some youth fled from the site.
Later in the evening, Valpoi police rounded up seven youth from the site and later released them.
Police said that ASI Gawas was rushed to Valpoi Community Health Centre and after he was administered medical treatment, he was discharged late Sunday night.
Police have registered the case under Sections 353, 143 and 141 of IPC. PI Shivram Vaigankar is investigating the case.
