VALPOI: Commuters passing by Valpoi and residents of the area are facing difficulties at night due to the absence of functioning streetlights. With the roads plunged in darkness, there is poor visibility for commuters. Locals complained that for a long period of time now, the streetlights in the town have not been working and about the sense of fear while traveling at night.
There is also the issue of stray cattle occupying space on the roads. Locals said there are possibilities of accidents taking place, if there is any collision between the commuters and stray cattle.
The same is the case with speed breakers which are not clearly visible to commuters. During the heavy rains, it becomes all the more difficult for commuters.
They added that they have verbally complained many times to the Valpoi Electricity Department but no one is taking any action. Further, when any follow up query is done via the phone, the Electricity Department personnel informs the locals that they will check, but in reality nothing is being done and the situation remains as it is.
Due to the recent number of accidents that have occurred on these roads, the locals have called upon the civic body to take responsibility and direct the electricity department to carry out the maintenance work given that the situation has remained unresolved for months now.
Reacting to this, Valpoi Municipal Council, Chairperson Akhtar Shah has said that he has already informed the Electricity Department regarding the Valpoi town street lights matter but lamented that no action has been taken till date.
When contacted, the Electricity Department claimed that they have not received any written complaints and that they cannot restore the power supply to these poles due to the lack of fixtures.
