VALPOI: Valpoi Police on Tuesday arrested a bus driver allegedly involved in an accident at Redeghat-Valpoi that claimed the life of a youth from Khotode on Monday evening.
It may be recalled that Bhingo Gholkar was crushed to death at Redeghat-Valpoi on Monday evening, after an unidentified vehicle dashed his motorcycle from the rear.
Outraged over the fatal mishap, about 100 villagers from Khotode marched to Valpoi Police station demanding the arrest of the person involved in the mishap.
The villagers, who had gathered at Valpoi Police station on Monday night, dispersed from the site at about 3 am on Tuesday, after police assured to arrest the culprit.
Police checked all vehicles throughout Monday night, while some villagers even gave a clue to the police about a few vehicles that had passed along that route at the time of the accident.
Police finally succeeded in tracing the bus at Bicholim on Tuesday morning. When police spotted a scratch on the bus, police arrested the driver, Umesh Chodankar of Mayem-Bicholim, and detained the bus.
The agitating villagers took the body of the deceased in a hearse van directly from GMC Bambolim to Valpoi Police station at about 2.45 pm and strongly demanded compensation to the family of the deceased.
When contacted, Valpoi Police Inspector Sanjay Dalvi said villagers who had gathered at Valpoi Police station dispersed at about 3 pm on Tuesday after the bus driver was arrested and also after getting assurance from the bus owner to pay compensation to the deceased’s family.
“The situation is under control and the case stands registered against the accused under Sections 279, 134 and 304 IPC,” added Pi Dalvi.
