Varca creek polluted, pedestrian bridge in dilapidated condition

MARGAO: Citizens are criticising the government and local authorities for failing to address complaints regarding the dilapidated bridge and contaminated creek at the popular Varca Beach in South Goa.

In a strongly-worded statement released on Wednesday, social activist and local resident Warren Alemao stated that he had visited Varca Creek once again and found the railing bridge leading to the beach in a broken and dangerous condition. He also pointed out that the creek itself was contaminated, likely due to the discharge of sewage.

“Varca village boasts two five-star hotels, along with several three-star hotels. Tourists frequent Varca Beach, only to witness a broken railing bridge and a contaminated creek,” Alemao said.

The activist claimed that he had reported the state of Varca Creek to various authorities under the State government as well as the local Benaulim MLA, Venzy Viegas, back in 2022. However, he alleged that no action has been taken so far against those responsible for discharging sewage into the creek.

Alemao went on to question why the culprits have not been traced. He also urged the MLA to address the environmental and infrastructural decay in their community and to make this a priority instead of other matters.
