MARGAO: The former sarpanch and panch of Varca Panchayat on Saturday cleared the tonnes of garbage that washed on the Varca Beach shore a day ago.

Panch Roland Fernandes put up an individual effort to save the beach and the people coming here from the garbage misery.

Tonnes of ocean waste made up of mainly plastic had washed ashore at Varca Beach. The beach wore a filthy look due to the garbage. Roland, former sarpanch and panch, employed earthmoving machinery and got the entire shore line of Varca cleared of the garbage.

After clearing the garbage Roland said, “I have never since childhood seen this kind of garbage getting washed on the shore. The Goan beaches have to be cleaned or we will lose tourism.”

“I urge the people not to throw the garbage into the water bodies or in the open. It makes its way into the ocean and washes on the shore in this manner,” he said.
