Varca residents call for cleaning of creek

MARGAO: Criticising the bad condition of the Varca creek, locals have called on the authorities to conduct an inspection and to take steps to stop the water body from getting contaminated. They also demanded that the creek is cleaned and rejuvenated.

Varca-based social worker Warren Alemao urged the Varca village panchayat to conduct an inspection and take this matter to the logical conclusion in the hope of protecting the river and further questioned why no action has been taken till date on this issue. He alleged that waste water is being released into the creek from commercial establishments.

“This is a matter of concern not only for the villagers but for the environment as a whole. After some days the creek will be cleared of the raw sewage by nature when it finds its way into the ocean. Is this the way we are

treating our environment? This has to stop immediately,” Alemao said after

an inspection was done by the locals.

He emphasized why the water body is important and stated that a well-managed and healthy creek can help drain storm water, reduce the impacts of flooding, prevent soil erosion and keep the waters clean for the native fish too.
