MARGAO: A woman riding a two-wheeler was killed in an accident at Chinchinim, on Saturday morning. The victim, identified as 42-year-old Albina Fernandes from Varca, was on her way to Sarzora to meet relatives when the tragedy occured.
The accident took place at the four-road junction at Dandewaddo at around 7 am. An SUV collided with Albina’s scooter and subsequently crashed into an electric pole. The driver and occupants of the car fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle.
Albina sustained serious injuries and was transported to the South Goa District Hospital in Margao, where she was declared dead on arrival. Her body has been moved to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.
Cuncolim PI Diogo Gracias and the Cuncolim police have registered an offence against the unknown driver under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death by negligence), and 134(b) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Both the car and the scooter have been removed from the road after the necessary panchanama was conducted.
The location of the accident is noted to be one of the accident-prone areas in Salcete. Local authorities and residents have expressed concerns over the safety of this junction, emphasising the need for increased traffic regulation and preventive measures to avoid future incidents.
