Registrar Goa University M M Sangodkar on Monday said it would be wrong to infer Goa University was at loggerheads with the State Government over the implementation of the Sports policy, even as he mentioned the Academic Council was awaiting a sub-committee report into the matter.
Sangodkar mentioned before the beginning of the Monsoon Session of Goa Legislative Assembly, he had placed in both writing and orally the steps the varsity had to take prior to the implementation of the policy to the legislature committee headed by Aldona MLA Dayanand Narvekar.
Speaking during a press conference in the presence of Vice-Chancellor Prof Dileep Deobagkar and faculty members, he mentioned, “The implementation of the policy at undergraduate and post-graduate levels will require careful scrutiny of the existing guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and other regulatory councils for professional education.”
He stated further, “There are various other ordinances by which the varsity is governed and it is important these too were looked into to see how efficiently the policy could be integrated.”
Sangodkar informed the GU too had an internal provision for allotting a small percentage of sports marks, but it was totally different from the State Sports Policy.
Over a question whether the varsity would do away with that provision once the state sports policy was enforced, he said the matter will have to be discussed at an appropriate level like the Academic Council.
GU had come in for some tongue lashing by Narvekar in the recently concluded Monsoon Session in the Assembly. The MLA made a charge the varsity had not taken any interest in implementing the policy.
