Fishing boat owners in Vasco have said that while the recently concluded fishing season was largely satisfactory, the sector continues to face significant challenges due to rising fuel prices and a shortage of labourers.
The Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association, headed by president and former minister Jose Philip D’Souza, has appealed to the government to revive the fuel subsidy scheme to provide relief to the fishing community.

Speaking on the issue, D’Souza said that escalating fuel costs have increased the operational burden on boat owners and fishermen, making it increasingly difficult to sustain traditional fishing activities. He noted that the fuel subsidy had previously played a crucial role in supporting the sector and helping fishermen manage expenses.
In addition to rising fuel prices, the association highlighted the shortage of labourers as another major concern affecting fishing operations. Boat owners have reportedly been facing difficulties in securing adequate manpower, impacting productivity and increasing operational challenges.
D’Souza stressed that timely government intervention is necessary to safeguard the livelihood of thousands of families dependent on the fishing industry. He urged the authorities to consider reinstating the subsidy scheme and introducing measures to address the labour shortage.
The association maintained that the fishing sector remains an important contributor to Goa’s economy and coastal communities, and called for policies that would ensure its long-term sustainability and growth.
